Black Bean and Yam Burgers

Discover our nutritious black bean and yam burger, perfect for babies and toddlers! Packed with flavor and wholesome ingredients, this easy recipe is a hit for little ones. Ideal for introducing new tastes while ensuring a healthy meal.

Oddly enough this is a meal by baby really enjoy. Of all things, I did not think he would like black bean patties, but he does! The first time I gave him a little bite I expected him to spit it out. But to my surprise he ate it and was asking for more. He proceeded to eat the equivalent of an entire patty to himself. I was shocked! He seems to enjoy things with lots of flavour, like parsley, garlic, onion, etc. The more aromatics, the better.

You'll understant that I put this recipe on heavy rotation in our house given how easy it is to make, how healthy it is and to top it off, my 9 months old (at the time) loved them. I still make this recipe quite regularly and I like to freeze some patties. It is so handy to just pop out of the freezer on nights where I don't want to cook a meal from scratch. We usually keep buns in the freezer as well. Pop some pickles, red onions, and other toppings of choice and voila, you have yourself a yummy dinner under 10 minutes. As for my son, he enjoys his broken in little pieces (make sure it is age appropriate for your child's development) dipped in a little bit of oat greek yogurt.

Toddler and Baby-Friendly Curry Black Bean Burgers

Welcome to my blog! Today, I'm thrilled to share one of my go-to recipes for my baby—Curry Black Bean Burgers. Not only are these burgers packed with flavor and nutrients, but they are also incredibly versatile and easy to prepare. Best of all, they can be adapted to suit babies and toddlers by simply omitting the salt and cutting them into age-appropriate shapes. Let’s dive into the health benefits, preparation tips, and ways to make this recipe work for your little one!

Why Curry Black Bean Burgers?

Feeding our little ones nutritious meals is essential for their growth and development. Here’s why my Curry Black Bean Burgers are a fantastic choice:

Nutritional Benefits

  1. High in Protein: Black beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein. Protein is crucial for toddlers as it supports muscle growth, repair, and overall development.

  2. Packed with Fiber: These burgers are rich in fiber, which promotes healthy digestion and helps maintain steady energy levels. A diet high in fiber is linked to a lower risk of constipation, which is common in young children.

  3. Vitamins and Minerals: The ingredients, such as sweet potatoes and spices like turmeric, provide essential vitamins and minerals. Sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A, which is important for vision and immune health.

  4. Healthy Fats: If you choose to add a little olive oil or avocado, you’re incorporating healthy fats that support brain development, crucial during the early years.

  5. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The spices used in these burgers, particularly turmeric, are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits, which can support overall health.

Preparing a Big Batch

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cooking in bulk can save you time and effort, especially on busy days. Here’s how to make a big batch of Curry Black Bean Burgers:

  1. Gather Your Ingredients: For the complete recipe, you’ll need black beans, sweet potatoes, oats, and spices (like curry powder and garlic). Adjust the quantities based on how many patties you want to make.

  2. Cooking the Sweet Potatoes: Start by peeling and cubing the sweet potatoes. Boil or steam them until tender. This can be done in a large pot to save time.

  3. Mixing It Up: In a large bowl, mash the black beans and cooked sweet potatoes together. You can use a fork or a potato masher. Then, mix in the oats and spices until everything is well combined.

  4. Forming Patties: Using your hands, shape the mixture into patties. For toddlers, consider using cookie cutters to create fun shapes.

  5. Cooking Options: You can bake, pan-fry, or grill the patties. If baking, place them on a lined baking sheet at 375°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Freezing and Storing

Best Practices for Freezing

Freezing your Curry Black Bean Burgers is an excellent way to ensure you always have a healthy meal on hand. Here are some tips to help you freeze and store them effectively:

  1. Cool Before Freezing: Allow the cooked burgers to cool completely before freezing. This helps prevent freezer burn and keeps them fresh longer.

  2. Use Airtight Containers: Store the burgers in airtight containers or freezer bags. Be sure to label each container with the date and contents for easy identification.

  3. Portion Control: Freeze the patties in single layers, placing parchment paper between them to prevent sticking. This makes it easy to grab just the right amount for your toddler’s meal.

  4. Thawing Tips: When you’re ready to serve, you can thaw the burgers in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can use a microwave’s defrost setting for quicker results. Always ensure they are heated through before serving.

Meal Ideas and Serving Suggestions

How to Serve

Here are some creative serving ideas to make mealtime fun for your little one:

  1. Fun Shapes: Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes from the burgers. This can make mealtime exciting for toddlers and encourage them to eat.

  2. Serve with Dips: Pair the burgers with healthy dips like yogurt, guacamole, or hummus. Dipping is a fun way for toddlers to engage with their food.

  3. Mini Sliders: For older toddlers, consider serving the patties on small whole-grain buns for a mini slider experience. You can add some mashed avocado or a slice of cheese for added flavor.

  4. Vegetable Sides: Serve the burgers alongside colorful vegetables or a fruit salad to create a balanced meal. Introducing a variety of colors and textures can help your child develop a taste for different foods.

Health Considerations

Allergies and Sensitivities

When introducing new foods to your baby or toddler, it’s essential to be aware of potential allergies. Black beans, sweet potatoes, and oats are generally safe, but always introduce new ingredients one at a time. Monitor for any adverse reactions, especially if you have a family history of allergies. Consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns.

Balanced Nutrition

While these burgers are nutritious, they should be part of a balanced diet. Aim to include a variety of foods from all food groups—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats. This ensures that your child receives a comprehensive range of nutrients for optimal growth and development.
