Sweet and Spicy Tofu Recipe

Prep time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 15 mins Total time: 25 mins

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of extra firm tofu (350 g.)

  • 3 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1/4 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 2 tbps maple syrup

  • 2 tbps apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1/4 tsp ginger powder

  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp sriracha

  • 2 garlic cloves - pressed or minced

  • 3 tbsp water

  • 2 cups of white or brown rice (cooked according to the package)

  • 1 head of steamed broccoli florets

Optional Toppings:

  • chopped green onions and sesame seeds

How to make it: Prepare the tofu:

  1. Break the tofu into pieces as seen on the photos or cut into cubes and place in a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the cornstarch over tofu cubes or pieces and toss gently to coat them evenly.

  2. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large skillet, wok or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

Prepare the sauce:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, soy sauce, sriracha, maple syrup (or sub for brown or coconut sugar), apple cider vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, garlic powder, ginger powder and water until well combined. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to your preference, adding more sriracha for extra heat or more maple syrup for sweetness.

  2. Once the tofu is crispy, pour the sweet and spicy sauce over the tofu in the skillet. Stir gently to coat the tofu in the sauce and allow it to heat through for another minute or two or until it thickens up to your liking.

Serve:

  • Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions, if desired.

  • Serve hot as a main dish alongside rice, roasted potatoes, steamed greens or noodles, or as a flavourful addition to salads or stir-fries.

Enjoy!
